Unity in the Community envisions one worldwide community with one common goal that enriches all lives.
WHAT WE DO
Improve the quality of life for citizens of Polk County and surrounding areas by providing spiritual, cultural, educational and entertaining activities for the entire family, regardless of race, nationality, gender or other diversities.
How It All Began
In 2007, leaders of seven African American churches in Polk County, NC came together to explore opportunities to collaborate on improving the quality of life for congregants and residents of the surrounding communities. The seven churches include Green Creek Missionary Baptist Church, New Zion C.M.E. Church, Garrison Chapel Baptist Church, Stoney Knoll C.M.E. Church, Wheat Creek Baptist Church, Moore’s Grove Baptist, and Zion Grove A.M.E. Zion Church. Union Grove Baptist Church later joined in the collaboration of Unity in the Community of the Foothills.
The organization set out to enhance the lives of the young people in the area and provide them with safe, enjoyable, entertaining, and spiritual activities locally. This led to a series of events called "Saturday Night Live". After much success with this project, Unity in the Community of the Foothills (UITC) felt the need to expand its local impact area to include adults and seniors.
In 2015, UITC re-organized with a board made of up 16 community leaders and people that had a heart for the community and it's people. The organization also gained it status as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a grant from the Polk County Foundation and help from dedicated employees of the Resourceful Communities Conservation Fund. Today UITC remains a very active and vital part of the community offering numerous programs, projects and events, all of which are free to the public, to enhance the lives of people of the area. All Events are currently funded by Grants from the Polk County Community Foundation.
